Amsterdam, the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is an ancient city with a rich and interesting history. And, of course, the history of the city is reflected primarily in the architecture.
Coin tower – a reminder that once the city was surrounded by walls, and the gate was guarded like a powerful guard towers. Coin tower is located on a busy square Coin, where the Singel canal connects with the river Amstel. Tower – or rather, two towers and a large guard house - were built in the late XV century and were part of the main gate. After a fire in 1618 survived only a portion of the West tower and the guardhouse. The tower was built in 1620 in Renaissance style: now it is crowned with an octagonal cupola with a clock and openwork spire. The Carillon of 38 bells ringing every quarter of an hour, and on Saturdays you can hear the bells playing the bell ringer of the tower.
Its name from an ancient tower received only in the XVII century. French troops occupied part of the territory of the Netherlands, and the mint, urgently translated in Amsterdam from Dordrecht and Anhausen, temporarily housed in the tower and adjoining the guardroom. Modern guard house built on the old site in the nineteenth century.
In recent years, the Foundation of the tower was strengthened, as was laid near the new metro line.
Now coin tower – business card and one of the recognizable symbols of Amsterdam, a popular tourist attraction. Near it is a large flower market and the shopping street the Kalverstraat.
