The process of Indian independence was difficult and long. One of the main actors that contributed to the realization of this cherished for many Indian residents dreams into reality, became man by the name of Jawaharlal Nehru. He later became the first Prime Minister of an independent state. The people of India remembers and loves this public and political figure, therefore, after his death in 1964, were based memorial Museum and library named after Jawaharlal Nehru, with the aim of saving the history of the national movement for freedom.
The Museum is an Autonomous organization, established on the basis of the Ministry of Culture of India in the territory of the Teen Murti House, the residence of the first Prime Minister. This building was built in 1929 for the commander in chief of the British Army, and now it is the center for the study of modern Indian history. The West wing of Teen Murti House reserved for the library, and the East wing houses the Museum.
In the library of the memorial contain many documents, books, manuscripts and letters, which, interestingly, from 2011 can be viewed in the online mode. Also there are books and manuscripts of the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, and their translations into various languages.
In the Museum you can see photos, personal belongings of Jawaharlal Nehru, the gifts that he gave to the heads of different States. Also part of the Museum is located in Teen Murti House Planetarium.
After the creation of the memorial Museum has gathered such a huge number of exhibits that there is a need to build additional buildings for storage. Therefore, by 1989, was erected near another building, which houses the Centre for Contemporary Studies.
Every year on 1 April, the day of creation of the Museum, organized Annual Day Lecture on Jawaharlal Nehru.
