Cathedral of the assumption Photo: Cathedral of the assumption

The assumption Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Kherson. It was founded in 1785 in the Greek area on the initiative of Kherson merchants. There is a legend that once started the construction work of the temple, stopped the plague raging at the time in Kherson. In August 1798 the construction is completed, after which the assumption Church was consecrated, and a year later was consecrated its two limits: North – in the name of Great Martyr Barbara, the South in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker. The construction of the Cathedral would never have ended if not for the 40-thousandth one anonymous donation Zaporozhets.

Uspensky Cathedral was built in the style of early classicism. Cross-domed Church has the shape of an elongated cross. Modest appearance redeems enchanting interior decoration. Beautiful lighting of the Church opens the eyes of its visitors the icon of the Dormition and gorgeous, exquisite iconostasis. In 1828 a simple parish Church became the Cathedral of the town. In 1853, the assumption Cathedral was given the status of Cathedral. Holiday and Sunday worship in the temple was conducted by the local Bishop F. I. Radkevich.

In the 50s of the 19th century in the history of the Cathedral, there were two important events: the first took place in 1852, when the first vaults of the temple in procession visited the miraculous Kasperovsky icon of the Heavenly Queen, and the second in 1855, when the Cathedral was visited by the Emperor Alexander II.

In 1930 the Church was closed and all its values savagely plundered. From amazing iconostasis survived only one icon of the blessed virgin standing on a Crescent moon. Only the Cathedral had about 50 icons. A little later the temple were removed and destroyed the dome, and after a while was defeated and the city's largest bell. In 1931 the building of the Dormition Cathedral opened the gym plant named after Petrovsky. And only in January 1993, after the Church was given to the Orthodox Church, it resumed service.
