The most beautiful and interesting architectural monument of the nineteenth century in Nizhny Novgorod is the Rukavishnikov estate, part of the Nizhny Novgorod state historical and architectural Museum-reserve.
Originally a two-storey stone mansion on the Upper Volga embankment belonged to merchant S. Islamaba, but in the 1840-ies for the debts went to the owner of a steel plant M. G. Rukavishnikov. Later, in 1870, and was succeeded by S. M. Rukavishnikov turned the mansion into a magnificent Palace in the Italian style. To implement such an ambitious reconstruction was invited by the architect P. S. Fighters. In the new project architect included: the construction of the third floor, annexe in the form of wings, a Grand marble staircase and decorated with stucco and paintings. The facade of the building was richly decorated with stucco figures of caryatids in window piers and Atlantes supporting the balcony of the second floor. All the rooms of the mansion decorated wall and ceiling painted with bas-reliefs, tiled flooring art parquet. In 1877 the house Rukavishnikova was considered the richest in Nizhny Novgorod.
Since 1924 in the mansion eminent merchants located Museum, and later entered the Nizhny Novgorod state historical and architectural Museum-reserve.
