In the highest part of the city centre, on the hill-the hill was located the Orthodox Cathedral, visible from any point of Tuapse. Hence the title slides at the time of the Church. Original name of this hill – Fortress, was built Velyaminovskaya Fort. As in Soviet times, the hill was called the Pioneer.
During the great Patriotic war the city of Tuapse were subjected to violent air raids and aerial bombardment. In the ruined Cathedral housed anti-aircraft batteries defending the city from air raids. Aircraft the Germans had made numerous attempts to destroy anti-aircraft batteries, so the slide was pitted with craters from the explosions of bombs.
In 1965, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet army in the great Patriotic war a decision was made to rename a Pioneer of the slides in the Slide Heroes and the erection here of a monument to the Unknown soldier. May 9, 1965 here were buried the remains of unknown soldiers, Eternal fire, put up a guard of honor. The authors of the project P. A. Kramnik and D. K. Lisicki. Burials and later, however beautified the grounds of the memorial. Today to the Hill Heroes is a broad staircase, her steps a panorama of the commercial port of Tuapse. On the approach to the stairs in a semicircle with a marble commemorative plaque mentioning the names and exploits were killed during the liberation of Tuapse soldiers, lists of military units of all branches of the armed forces who fought in the direction of Tuapse in the great Patriotic war.
Memorial Hill Heroes is a place of worship for the soldiers who died in battles for Tuapse. Every year on 9 may, many locals come here to honour the memory of fallen soldiers.
