The monument to the destroyer Photo: the monument to the destroyer "Kerch"

The monument to the destroyer "Kerch" is located on the waterfront of the city of Tuapse and is a huge Sandstone boulder, the shape like a bow attached to it with the Admiralty anchor. The monument was erected in 1968, on the fiftieth anniversary of the tragic events that occurred in hard times.

In the spring of 1918 against the army of the allies captured Odessa, Nikolaev and Perekop – there is a real threat of full occupation of the Crimea. The Council of people's Commissars, headed by Lenin decided to withdraw the entire black sea fleet stationed in Sevastopol, Novorossiysk, in order to avoid seizure of ships by the Germans. Just Novorossiysk was forwarded twelve destroyers, ten boats and eight conveyors, two battleships and five destroyers. In response, the Germans, in violation of the Brest Treaty, took Sevastopol and gave an ultimatum to the Soviet leadership with the requirement for six days to return the fleet in Sevastopol. As the Red army at that time did not have enough strength to resist, it was decided to flood the entire fleet.

June 17, 1918 the decision was carried out, and a fatal role in these events was played by the destroyer "Kerch". The decision to flood the fleet caused a storm of protests among the population and the sailors. Only an ardent supporter of flooding of the fleet was the commander of the destroyer "Kerch" - V. A. Kukel who took upon themselves the execution of the order. At dawn on 19 June near Tuapse was sunk and the destroyer "Kerch".

It should be noted that part of the fleet still managed to save and transport ships in Tsaritsyn, where on this basis was created Volino-Caspian military flotilla.
