The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Veliki Preslav is situated in a small beautiful Park in the centre of the city. The facade of the building is a tiny portion of the right side of the St. Sophia Church, St. Alexander Nevsky.
The Foundation of the Church was laid in 1908, however, in 1912-1913 the Balkan war, the construction was suspended. Then gradually resumed, but prevented another war – the First world and it has instigated a lack of funds for further construction of the Church. Residents of Veliki Preslav began on their own to raise money, using any of the methods – different types of donations, collecting signatures for petitions and even caroling. Similar action was extended not only to the city but also the surrounding villages. Taken any other building material, construction was often used volunteer labor.
In 1930 the construction of the Church was completed, and in 1931 it was consecrated by Metropolitan Joseph. From this point on in the Church begin to conduct worship services. Work on the painting of the Church under the guidance of Professor Nikolay Rostovtsev were completed in 1951. Many of the icons of the Church are part of the history of Veliki Preslav and refer to the time of Tsar Boris I and the establishment of Orthodoxy as a state religion in Bulgaria.
