Previously, the town of kroměříž was surrounded with high walls, behind which could be through one of the three city gates. Unfortunately, our time has preserved only some of them, called the Mill. The other two are Water and Forge were destroyed in the late nineteenth century.

Mill gate was used to control the road to mint, manor mill and brewery. Using them often was carrying beer in barrels in the estate, which was located outside the town. This gate was always under guard. There were on duty day and night, the representatives of the Bishop's guard.

Previously, the facade of the Mill gates, this Grand, impressive buildings, was decorated with colorful frescoes, which can be judged by the only surviving fragment at the top of the tower. Local historians believe that these frescoes were executed during the reign of the Bishop of Liechtenstein-Casteldarne after the Thirty years war. At the same time were restored many ruined buildings in the city.

Commemorative inscription on the gate is made of the Latin and is a chronogram is a text in which the letters are accepted Roman numerals prevailing on a specified date. Year, which is encoded in the chronogram at Mill gate - 1665.

In the nineteenth century, the gate was rebuilt, and in the next to the gateway building was made a passage for pedestrians, as frequent accidents associated with wagons and cars. The result of this reconstruction we see today.

The gate is decorated with a green roof, look unusual and remind us of past centuries, when the town kroměříž compact and cozy.
