Juliet's house is perhaps the most visited attraction of Verona, to see that thousands of lovers from all over the world. This small house was built in the 13th century and, thanks to the great genius of William Shakespeare, for centuries considered the home of the legendary Juliet.
Once this building, located not far from Piazza Erbe, belonged to the family Dal Cappello, which became the prototype of the family of the Capulets. Their coat of arms in marble hats today and can be seen on the archway leading into the inner courtyard. In the second half of the 17th century the house was sold, and since then has repeatedly changed owners until in 1907 it was purchased by the City Council of Verona for the organization of the Museum. By the time the house is almost completely dilapidated and required significant repair and restoration work. However, the municipality has not been able to find the money for it, and only after the release in 1936 the famous film by George cukor Romeo and Juliet" began active work to turn the house into a tourist attraction.
In accordance with Shakespeare's play, the House of Juliet gave a romantic view: the brick facade was decorated with Gothic elements, the Windows were framed accordingly, and even had reconstructed some of the buildings facing the courtyard. The yard with the legendary Juliet's balcony was also rebuilt into a resemblance of a yard of film cukor – appeared jagged wall and the column under the balcony. Later on that wall put the lines from Shakespeare's tragedy. And in 1972 there was a bronze statue of Juliet and highly popular among tourists. It is believed that touching her right breast will bring good luck in love.
Restoration work was also carried out in the 1970-ies and 1990-ies. During the last in the house with appropriate ornaments and frescoes has created the atmosphere of the 14th century. Finally, in 1997, the House of Juliet was inaugurated the Museum. Today, visitors can see works of art created on the theme of "Romeo and Juliet", photographs from the film of cukor and the collection of objects from paintings by Franco Zeffirelli 1968 – two, the marriage bed, and thumbnails. Many tourists leave on the walls of the arch leading into the yard from the street, declarations of love.
By the way, in Verona there is the so-called House is a historic 14th-century mansion that belonged to the family of Nogarola. It has Gothic features and is surrounded by a crenellated curtain wall. Sorry, this is private property, and access is closed. All offers of municipality of buying a house and turning it into a Museum were rejected by the owners.
