The monastery of Agios Nektarios is one of the most famous and popular attractions of the picturesque Greek Islands of Aegina, as well as one of the most important religious shrines of Greece. The cloister is located about 6 km from the homonymous capital of the island and is situated on a hill that offers breathtaking panoramic views.
The monastery was founded in 1904 by Nektarios of Aegina and was called the Holy Trinity. In December 1908 he resigned from the post of Director of the Theological school in Athens, and held since 1894, and settled in the Holy Trinity monastery as a monk. Here he lived until his death in 1920, and was buried on the monastery grounds.
The main temple of the monastery - the imposing Church of Agios Nektarios, built not so long ago. This Grand building designed in neo-Byzantine style, decorated with magnificent mosaics. From the Church up the hill is a steep staircase to the very monastery complex. Here is the Church of the Holy Trinity is the oldest Church of the monastery. Next to a small chapel is a marble sarcophagus, which was previously buried the body of Saint Nektarios, and nearby is also the source of Holy water. Preserved till our days and the monastic cell in which the Saint lived the last years of his life (open for visits). The main Shrine of the monastery, are unquestionably the head of the Saint and his miraculous power.
Saint Nectarios of Aegina is one of the most famous and revered Greek Orthodox saints (canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1961). Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to the island of Aegina in the Holy monastery to venerate the relics of the Saint to ask for help and blessings. November 9 marks the feast day of St. Nektarios. On this day there is a special crowd, as countless believers who want to participate in a solemn service to honor the memory of St. Nektarios.
