On a hilltop above the resort of Ayia Marina is quite well-preserved Doric temple of Aphaia, built in the time of economic and cultural prosperity of the island at the beginning of the V century BC

In the vertical position are 24 columns of the first and second tiers. The corner columns were specially thickened to inspire the feeling of power and smooth optical effect of the purification columns. Inside there were Zella with sculpted statue of the goddess, which time has spared, and a pool of olive oil for sacrificial libations.

In 1811, during the excavation of the temple were found the sculptures of the pediments depicting the battle between mythological heroes. Now the original pediments are on display in Munich Glyptotek.
