The temple of Harmandir Sahib, also known as Darbar Sahib, is located in Armasar in the Indian state of Punjab. But most often it is called the "Golden temple" due to the fact that almost all of its external surface to the top of the dome, except the bottom layer, covered with gold leaf. This Gurdwara of the Sikhs, in other words – a place of worship, was established by the fifth Guru of the Sikhs – Guru Arjan Dev about in the XVI century. And when in 1604 were completed Scriptures of this religion, called the ADI Granth, they were deposited in the temple Harmandir Sahib.
Its present form it acquired after the restructuring, which was made in 1764, on the initiative of the prominent spiritual leader of the Sikhs Sultan ul of quama the Nawab Jassy Singh Ahluwalia. In addition, in the nineteenth century, another Sikh leader ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh ordered to cover the upper floors of the temple with gold, for which, as already mentioned above, the Harmandir Sahib and received its name "Golden temple". But the official name "Harmandir Sahib" literally translates as "Temple of God".
In General, the Harmandir Sahib is a real complex situated around a small lake Sarovar, in the centre of which stands the building of the temple. The water in this lake is considered to be therapeutic, people believe that it is a mixture of Holy water and the elixir of immortality.
In the Golden temple can be accessed through one of four existing doors – one on each side, which symbolizes the openness of the temples of the Sikhs for all people, regardless of their nationality and religion. Due to this Darbar Sahib is visited daily by about a hundred thousand people.
