The Puente Bolognesi Photo: Puente Bolognesi

Among the attractions of the city of Arequipa is not only its beautiful old houses, built of hewn stone, but three impressive bridge, which is over a hundred years. The oldest bridge of the city, the bridge Bolonti, also built of hewn stone. Construction began on 11 June 1577 by the architect Juan de Aldan and continued until 1608. The total cost of the bridge amounted to 150 000 pesos. His thick arches, crossing the river Chile, connect street La Puente Bolognesi with the historic city centre, Plaza de Armas, pouring into the picturesque panorama of the modern city.

At the end of the seventeenth century - early eighteenth century due to intense earthquakes (October 20, 1687, and 22 August 1715) bridge Bolognesi had been damaged and he needed constant repair, so it was allowed to the employees who performed the repair of the bridge, to build their houses at its foot.

In 1970 the Puente Bolognesi became one of the main routes from the historic centre to the modern quarter Yanahuara with intense car traffic, which has become the main factor of physical deterioration of the old bridge. In the late 1990s, local authorities have carried out a major overhaul on the streets of La Puente Bolognesi and repaired the bridge, resumed sewer and storm drains, upgraded highway and expanded the sidewalk for pedestrians. Work has also been done on the restoration of historic facades and lighting systems of streets, which included the participation of students from the school workshop Arequipa.

These activities helped to preserve the historical legacy of Arequipa for posterity.
