Next to Ueno Park Tokyo national Museum is the oldest and largest in the country. It was created in 1872, when the Emperor Meiji "opened" Japan to the Western world and felt the need of the first public Museum.

Today on the territory of 100 thousand square meters has five buildings, in the Museum there are 120 thousand units. It all started with an exhibition in one of the buildings of the temple Yushima-seido with six hundred exhibits. The exhibition was a motley mixture of cultural heritage items, personal items family members of the Emperor, stuffed animals and birds, utensils, specimens of flora, minerals and other things. However, it was a huge success, and the Museum was created under the Ministry of culture – the prototype of modern institutions.

Today among the exhibits of the Tokyo National Museum you can see samples of fine and applied arts, calligraphy, weapons and armor, samurai swords, clothes and fabric, items of everyday life in Japan, models of architectural monuments and more.

The main building of the Museum – Honkan – called the heart of the Museum. Here is a gallery of Japanese art. This building was built in the 30 years of the twentieth century and mixed in its appearance national architectural features and European style art Deco. On the ground floor of the gallery contains masterpieces from different areas of art, on the second exhibits are placed in chronological order, starting with ancient Buddhist sculptures from wood. Here you can see the multimeter scrolls with sophisticated designs and elegant calligraphy, screens painted with the story, the costumes of the actors of Kabuki, samurai armor, and more.

Housing HaSatan is dobuddistsky Japanese art and archaeological curiosities, which were established several centuries before the Christian era.

Asian gallery, or Tollocan, introduces the Chinese works of art, which served as models for Japanese artists, and also with the art of other countries of the East.

The ceremonial building of the Museum is a monument of architecture of the Western style of the time of Meiji, currently performs the function of the educational center, it hosts seminars and conducts the work of several scientific societies.
