One of the important historical attractions in Copenhagen is the Royal Palace of Christiansborg, located on the island of Slotsholmen. The founder of the castle in 1167 became Bishop Absalon, founder and Copenhagen. In 1249 the castle was occupied and burnt by the army of lübeck, with which Denmark waged a trade war. Over time, the Copenhagen castle was restored, but in 1369, the army of the Hanseatic League again burned it.
During the reign of Christian VI in the ruins was built the Christiansborg Palace in Baroque style. The construction was completed by 1745. In 1794, the castle was again destroyed. Began the construction of the second Christiansborg and the Royal family moved to Amalienborg. To restore the castle invited architect Hansen and new construction started in the simple style of French classicism. In 1828 the construction of Christiansborg finished. However, the family of Frederick VI didn't want to move to the residence, there was placed the Danish Parliament, and used the castle for dinner receptions. With 1852-1863 year in Christiansborg lived monarch Frederick VII, in 1884, the castle burned down.
The third and final architect of the castle was Thorwald Yogenson, he built it with 1907-1928 year in neo-Baroque style. Originally the roof was covered with tiles, but in 1938 it was changed to copper sheets. On the spire of the castle is the weather vane in the form of two crowns. Great addition of the castle became the equestrian statue of Christian IX on the square is the work of sculptor Carl Nilsson. During the construction were found fragments of masonry of the castle of Bishop Absalon.
Today the castle is a Royal residence, the Royal library, the Danish Parliament, Supreme court and the office of the Prime Minister. In the remaining part of the castle is a Museum.
