The Church of St. Stanislaus and Wenceslaus – Gothic Church located in the Polish city of świdnica. The Church is one of the most important monuments in the city and the largest Church in Lower Silesia. The tower height of 103 meters is considered the fifth largest in Poland.
The Church was built in the fourteenth century by order of Prince Bolek II Small after the previous wooden Church burned down. The legend says that the first stone of a new Church was laid by the Prince himself in 1330.
The Church was built in the late Gothic style, with the West facade which rises a tall tower. The three naves are decorated with sculptures of Sandstone. On the outer sides of the portal are visible symbols of the four evangelists - Northern eagle (John), lion (mark), ox (Luke) and the angel (Matthew).
The interior is impressive height of the Central nave, which rises 25 meters. At different periods in the Church were built six chapels. The original Gothic interior was destroyed by fire in 1532.
With 1644 in 1776 the Church belonged to the Jesuits, who rebuilt it in the Baroque style. Most of the statues and altars were made by Jan Ridala. The main altar is his greatest work, the main stage, depicting the Madonna and child surrounded by saints. Among extant medieval elements is the most valuable Gothic polyptych 1492 in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
After the secularization of the Church, with the consent of the Prussian government was turned into a granary. Restored in 1893-1895 the Church lost many of its original architectural features.
In March 2004, according to the decree of Pope John Paul II, the Church of St. Stanislaus and Wenceslaus became the Cathedral of the diocese.
