The archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos is located on the North of lake Voulismeni on Paleologos street, 74, a few minutes walk from the city centre. The Museum was founded in 1970 and has a rich collection of archaeological finds of the Prefecture of Lasithi.

The Museum collection includes ceramics, stone products, sculpture, figurines, household utensils, a variety of funerary artifacts, gold jewelry, bronzes and ivory, rare exhibits from children's graves, and more.
The most impressive exhibit of the Museum is the skull of a young man, was found at a Roman cemetery in the Potamos near the town. The skull dates from the 1st century ad and crowned with a Golden diadem in the form of olive leaves. In the mouth of the skull was a silver coin of the city of Polyrinia (Western Crete), which was dated to the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Coin, according to the ancient tradition, was the judgment of the carrier of souls to Charon in the underworld Hades across the river Styx.
Of particular interest are the artifacts discovered during the excavations of the Minoan cemetery of Agia fotia. It is a prehistoric cemetery, where it was found 260 Minoan graves, is the largest archaeological site of Crete. Found here 1600 different vessels made without using a Potter's wheel and in its style is similar to Cycladic art.
The Museum also has artifacts from the Minoan settlement of Myrtos, among which the most significant is considered the "Goddess of Myrtos" - a vessel in the form of a female figure. The Museum also displays artifacts from the Minoan Palace of Malia, including a magnificent stone vessel in the shape of a Triton shell.
