The Church of the ascension of Christ in Ahtopol is located in the Eastern part of the Peninsula on which is located the city. It is on the high sea, which on the one hand goes down almost vertically.

The exact construction date of temple is unknown. Presumably, the Church was built in 1796 as the date listed in commemorative inscriptions in the Greek language in the apse. However, it is not about the construction of the temple, and, most likely, about the time when the walls were painted indoors. There is a view that the Church of the ascension of Christ was established on the Foundation of another ancient temple in the middle Ages.

The Church is a small rectangular building with an apse. The length and width of the temple – h meters, height – 2, 3 meters. Wall thickness of about one meter constructed of large stones of irregular shape, between which is filled fastening solution. In two places at different heights around the perimeter of the building are drawn wooden slats and decorative architectural element. The building is crowned with overhanging eaves and hipped tile roof. In the East wall of the Church is the apse, a semicircular extension, but it is barely noticeable from the street, so apparently the Church can be mistaken for a normal house. The entrance was located on the South side. Like many other churches built in Bulgaria in the years of Ottoman rule, it partly on 40-50 cm is dug into the ground. In order to best protect the building, there were only two small Windows under the roof, facing West and North.

In apsidny part of the Church are ancient frescoes of the Deesis. It is worth noting that the images of the saints in the frescoes executed by the canons is not Bulgarian, and Byzantine iconographic style.

The ascension Church is a unique architectural monument not only because of its impressive age. In 1918, as a result of a strong fire Ahtopol almost completely burned down. The Church building on the beach – one of the few buildings that miraculously managed to avoid the fire element. Now this temple is perhaps the only evidence of the architecture that existed in the city until the beginning of XX century.
