The natural reserve Marano Lagoon" is spread over an area of 1,400 hectares in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and, in fact, consists of two smaller protected areas – reserve "fochi dello Stella" and reserve "Valle Canal Nuovo". Itself the lagoon is under the jurisdiction of the commune of Marano lagunare, which also organizes boat tours of the area.

A large part of the reserve consists of reed beds, sand bars and water ecosystems. The peculiarity of the Marano lagoon is constantly changing the salinity level of water. This feature was the reason that the reserve formed a unique biodiversity – both terrestrial and aquatic species. The most diverse is the bird life that is attracted to the lagoon of Marano thousands of tourists.

The larger of the two nature reserves that are part of the "Lagoon of Marano," the "fochi dello Stella", can be explored only by boat, because it is not available for terrestrial paths. To go on a water tour you can contact the municipality of Marano lagunare, - however, it is worth remembering that the group can only consist of 80 people. In the reserve include river Stella mouth and the surrounding land, covered with reeds and crossed the meandering streams.

Other reserve "Valle Canal Nuovo" has great opportunities for rest and cognitive activity. Most of it was once used for the breeding fish. Today on the reserve are a visitor center, observation deck, which offers the best views of the valley, the point of bird watching and children's Playground. It also hosts a variety obrazovatelnye activities for students. Interestingly, the only sources of fresh water for "Valle Canal Nuovo" are rainwater and three artesian wells.

The main inhabitants of the Marano lagoon are undoubtedly birds, primarily aquatic species – diverse species of ducks, mute Swan, Swan, whooping swans, laugh, Teal-swisstony and garganeys, mallards, Pintails, Pochards and tufted ducks. A rare achievement is meeting with small-breasted merganser or ferruginous duck.
