The city of Kandalaksha is located in the Murmansk region. It is located on the southern border of two dioceses: the Murmansk and Monchegorsk. Although John Church was built relatively recently, in 2005, the parish has a very long history.

About five centuries ago was the baptism on the river Niva, on the right Bank near the mouth. Here now stands the city of Kandalaksha. According to the writings of venerable Theodoret Kola, the locals came to Moscow with a request to hold over them the sacrament of baptism, and sanctify his Church. Then at the behest of the Prince Archbishop Makarios sent to them from Novgorod priest and deacon for performing last rites. In 1526 the monk Theodoretos Kola was erected a temple in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist. From this time and this place is the beginning of the history of the city. During the whole period of the existence of this temple, it was rebuilt many times. In 1548, around the temple formed the Kandalaksha monastery.

In 1589 the attack of the Swedes, the building of a Church, monastery and many peasant households suffered from the raids and plundering. More than four hundred people died at the hands of the Swedes. In the 16th century the temple became dilapidated and fell into disrepair. In 1751 Bishop Barsanuphius issued a Charter, which gave permission for the restoration of the ancient Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist. In 1768 the Church was reconstructed. In 1801 the consecration of the new Church. This building stood until the forties of the twentieth century. The new Church stood for a long time. He survived the attack of British troops during the Crimean war in the years 1855-1856. However, in the early forties of the last century in the framework of the anti-religious campaign, the Church was closed. The building was decapitated and desecrated. In the summer of 1988 Orthodox Kola diocese celebrated the 1000 year anniversary of the baptism of Rus. By that time in kandalaksa has already been registered by the community. During the festival, believers turned to his Grace Panteleimon, Bishop of Arkhangelsk and Murmansk, located in the town of Kirovsk, asking us to send them the town priest, because at that time the congregation was without a pastor. The Lord has promised to grant the request of the community and recommended a while to find a location for the future temple.

June 3, 1989, the feast of the Mother of God Vladimirskaya Kandalaksha city administration was officially transferred to the room, where the administration of the Kandalaksha nature reserve. Shortly thereafter, on 6 July 1989 the temporary altar in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist was consecrated. This was followed by a thanksgiving service.

Soon this place was built a spacious new Church. He is a single altar. Built of wood. Has a hipped design. The construction of the temple was laid in January 2000.
