The Church Of St. Nicholas Photo: Church Of St. Nicholas

First Church of SV. Nicholas in Asenovgrad is mentioned in documents in 1720. Twice, in 1793 and 1810, the city is under attack. Invaders both times burn Asenovgrad almost to the ground. During restoration work in the nineteenth century residents of the city decide to build a new Church instead of destroyed. Construction continues from 1816 to 1821, the Year of the consecration of the Church is associated with placement in special large iconostasis of the temple of the icon.

Once there was an ancient cemetery chapel of the XVII century. Who acted as architects and builders of the new temple, is not known. Since its construction was during the Ottoman rule, the Church, as it was expected, was partially dug into the ground. However, even then the Church was struck by its grandeur. The building has impressive dimensions: length – 17 meters width – 12 meters, the height of the walls is 5 meters. Interior space is divided into three naves by two rows of five columns. The spacious chancel of the Church is the apse, with both sides from it symmetrically arranged six niches. In the Western part of the Church you can see the balcony which once served as a room for women.

Since 1906 in the temple were repeatedly carried out restoration work. At the end of XX century was installed new dome made of marble floors, etc.

When visiting the Church you should pay attention to the carved iconostasis of an unknown master. Carver gracefully adorned his work with natural motifs such as flowers, animals. Originally made and the Bishop's throne with images of two-headed dragon, lion, sun and the vine.

The Church of St. Nicholas is an architectural ensemble, which, in addition to the building of the Church, is also located in the courtyard of the chapel is the crypt of St. Simeon the Stylite and Trifon Zarezan. The chapel was built in 1862 and is a single-nave building with an apse and porch, which is supported by four columns. The vaults of the Church is sheltering gable roof. The chapel was painted inside and out by master D. Steriade, however, now remained only the interior murals.
