Underground laboratory of the Permafrost Institute in Yakutsk is one of the popular tourist sites of the city. This unique construction was founded in 1961, the Main task of the Institute is a comprehensive study of permafrost, the history of its formation and development, the study of the composition and structure of permafrost.

Space the underground laboratory were made in the sandy deposits of the Lena river. The upper gallery is located at a depth of 5 m, the lower 12 m and the lowest point at a depth of 15 m. the Excavation of galleries and chambers underground lab made special drilling and blasting method. For almost all experiments that were performed in the underground laboratory, was required negative temperature. For this lower gallery was founded at the horizon of zero amplitudes of the temperature fluctuations of frozen soils directly beneath the permafrost Institute. The air temperature in the lower gallery of summer and winter remains almost unchanged around -4°...-5°C. with respect to relative humidity in the premises of a laboratory, it ranges from 70% to 100%.

There is a voluminous range of studies of the properties of the eternally frozen soils and processes that occur in them under human impact and natural conditions. In the underground laboratory of the Institute of Permafrost determined by the age of frozen soils, filtration, thermal, acoustic and mechanical properties, particle size distribution and so on.

On the basis of this unique underground laboratory has carried out a number of fundamental works concerning the study of the mechanical properties of ice, creep of frozen soils and physico-mechanical properties of thawed and frozen soils of Yakutia. The survey data used for the design and construction of hydraulic structures, residential and industrial buildings, pipelines and roads.
