Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, located on Cathedral square in the historic centre of Ventimiglia, is one of the largest religious sites in the city. According to some historical documents, the Cathedral dedicated to the assumption of the virgin Mary, was built between the 11th and 12th centuries on the ruins of the former Cathedral of the Carolingian era. The latter, in turn, was built on the site of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Juno, - so say the local legends.

In the early middle Ages, the Cathedral had a single nave, and only in the 12th century it was completely rebuilt and got the two side chapels. To the 13th century the construction of the portal with pointed arches, three apses (large and two small) and the presbytery. At the same time, the Church roof was replaced with semi-cylindrical vaults with half-columns in the Romanesque style.

Side view from the left of the small apse is the baptistery, dedicated to St. John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista), dated the same time as the Cathedral. It has the shape of an octagon, and in the 17th century was divided into two levels. At bottom, the perimeter of which are 8 NIS was installed baptismal font from the 13th century and even more ancient bowl-shaped mortar, while the upper level was occupied by the Baroque chapel of the santissimo canal Sacramento. In 1967-69-m years Cathedral, Ventimiglia was carefully restored and opened to the public.
