Semmeringissa railway - the first railway in the world, located in the mountains. Is in Austria and passes between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag through the mountain pass Semmering, has a very difficult terrain and significant elevation change. Still functions and is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways.

Semmeringissa railroad was built from 1848 to 1854. Were involved in the construction of about 20 thousand people. Project mountain railroad was designed by the architect Karl Gega. The railway passes at a height of 985 meters above sea level, in connection with which the design has 14 tunnels and 16 viaducts ( - ), over 100 curved stone bridges and 11 iron. Some of the administrative building and the stops were built of waste, which was formed during the construction of tunnels. The total length of the railway is 41 mile.

Used in the construction of new technologies and methods. In addition, were developed and new locomotives, able to cope with the turning radius of the railway. The elevation changes throughout the road consists of 460 meters, in some areas of the steepness of the blade reaches 2, 5%, which amounts to a rise of 1 meter to 40 meters of the road.

When railroad construction, the architect sought to create not only high-tech fabric, but also to surround its picturesque scenery, which would have delighted the passengers on the train. Currently these parts are ski resorts, the competition is held.

In 1998 Semmeringissa railway was included in the world heritage list of UNESCO.
