The Museum of the city of Alta in the open in the Finnmark province, founded in 1991, is a unique monument of ancient history, which the UNESCO world heritage list.

Presented here are the rock carvings – petroglyphs period 4200 – gg. BC belonging to the Komsa culture, which are the ancestors of the Saami. Carved images of various animals and birds, scenes of hunting, fishing, scenes from everyday life, mysterious geometric symbols for best viewing specially painted with red ocher on all pedestrian paths with a total length of about three kilometers.

These drawings show chronicling the most important historical events of the ancient tribe, and could be the simplest type of art of the time. The most common among the petroglyphs are images of deer, salmon and boats. There is every reason to prepalatal that the symbol of worship of the ancestors of the Saami was a bear.

The archaeological Museum in Alta is open all year round, but accessible to visitors from may to early October, while the drawings are not swept snow.

In July, daily at 12.00 conducted private tours, other days you will find a detailed guide included in the ticket price. Groups consisting of 10 people or more must book a guide in advance. There is also a café with soft drinks and sweets, and gift shop.
