The Bastille fortress, located in Grenoble on the right Bank of the Isere river, was built in the mid-nineteenth century. However, at the end of XVI century on this place was built a fortress for protection of Grenoble from attacks. The initiator of the construction was the Duke Frans de de Bonn Ledger, Grenoble seized and became its ruler. All this happened in the period of religious wars, and the Duke himself led the army of the Huguenots. The tower was called the Bastille, and then the name stuck and for other defensive buildings, and behind the hill.

Apart from the fortress, the Duke ordered to update the wall of the fortress to build a more powerful on the former, built by the Romans. New fortifications were not only able to withstand the severe onslaught, with their construction and significantly increased the area of the Fort. Today, of these fortifications can be seen only a few fragments.

In the XVII century Grenoble fortress could be famous fortified fortifier Sebastian de Vauban, who in his career has built and rebuilt the fortress in France. But despite developed the project of reconstruction, strengthening not been conducted. Was only built a storehouse for gunpowder and made earthen mounds.

In the eighteenth century fortification on the hill Bastille was unnecessary and subsequently abandoned. "Abandoned" buildings were damaged during the two severe floods in the first half of the century. About a hundred years later Fort de La Bastille again took to the French state, therefore, on the ruins of the fortress again, construction began. The works were supervised by military engineer, General françois-Nicolas-benoît AXO.

The Bastille fortress was a military target until 1940. Currently there are contemporary art center, restaurants, an observation deck, a military Museum. The fortress can be reached by funicular.
