Long ago this place was the sanctuary of Apollo. Was later built ionic temple of Apollo. It was a Grand structure, at the time, founded on luxury, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus, and so well-known as the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi. In Didim lived only the priests of this temple. Every four years they held the festivities in honour of this God with sports competitions and musical performances.

In the V century BC, the temple was destroyed by the Persians, but with Alexander the Great it was decided to restore and expand. But to build the temple and failed, and later the Byzantines took away almost all of the marble. There were only three large columns and lots of small stones.
