The volcanological Museum, located in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is one of the main cultural attractions of the city. Founded in 1963, the volcanological Museum is a unique Museum in Russia. Originally the Museum was a part of the Laboratory of active volcanism, but a long time of its development, no one did. In January 2005, the Museum of Volcanology became a structural subdivision of the Institute of Volcanology and seismology, far East branch, Russian Academy of Sciences.

The main task of the scientific-organizational activity of the Museum is the collection, classification, processing and storage of collections of unique samples of volcanic, plutonic and volcanic rocks, schemes, photos and videos about expeditions and volcanic eruptions in order to study them. Museum visitors can see a variety of unique collections of samples of ore and minerals as well as lava from the volcanoes of Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Italy, Japan, USA, Mexico, Iceland and New Zealand. All the specimens have been carefully studied, so that was installed on their chemical composition.

Special attention of visitors of the Museum enjoys a lot of wreckage cooled volcanic lava with all sorts of inclusions resulting from exposure to high temperatures and enormous pressure. The Museum exposition acquaints visitors with extinct and active volcanoes of Kamchatka Krai, mud pots, geysers, thermal springs and fumaroles.

Science Museum of Volcanology closely cooperates with the Institute of Volcanology and seismology, making Museum exhibits are constantly updated.
