Among the attractions of the Greek town of Kalavryta and its surroundings special attention deserves the monastery of Macelleria. It is located about 30 km from Kalavrita, on the right Bank of the river Selinunte, near the village Lapanga, on top of steep cliffs and offers a fantastic panoramic views and extremely relaxing atmosphere of silence and peace.

The monastery of Macellaria is one of the oldest Orthodox shrines of Greece. It was founded in the year 532 by decree of the talented commander of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I of Course, trying thus to atone for its brutal suppression of the infamous rebellion "nick" in Istanbul (the largest rebellion in the history of Constantinople and Byzantium). Originally the cloister was called "the monastery of virgin Mary Lithostrotion" (probably due to its location on top of a cliff). Its modern name, the monastery received in the second half of the 15th century after a brutal massacre, arranged here by the Turks in 1458.

The main Catholicon of the monastery is the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the Byzantine style. Luxury wooden iconostasis you will see the main relic of the monastery and a beautiful example of Byzantine art – the miraculous icon of the virgin. They say that this icon has a very special feature: which temple you are, it seems that the virgin Mary is watching you. Near the katholikon is the small Church of the assumption, and a little below the monastery complex in a small cave is another temple – chapel of the Transfiguration, where above the altar right out of the rock all year round beats the healing power.
