Canongate Church Photo: Canongate Church

Canongate Church parish Church in the Old town in Edinburgh. To this parish belong to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh castle, although it is located some distance from the Church. In the summer of 2011 there was held the wedding of Zara Phillips, granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, with Mike Tindalos.

District Canongate for many years was a separate city, its merger with Edinburgh took place in 1856. The Church was built in 1688-1691 G. Previously parishioners attended the Church of Holyrood Abbey, but king James VII ordered the construction of a separate Church, and the Church of the Abbey to transfer to the Order of the Thistle.

The Church is quite unusual from the point of view of architectural style. Its front part is made in the Dutch style, and the entrance was decorated with a portico with small Doric columns. In plan the Church is a square, but the inner part is designed in the form of a cross, which is very unusual for Scottish churches built in the period between the reformation and the Victorian era. The interior of the Church underwent significant changes in 1882, including was an organ. Part of these changes was remade in 1952, and the interior was largely restored in its original strict simplicity.

At the cemetery Kanongataa the Church are buried many famous people, including economist Adam Smith, the poet Robert Fergusson, private Secretary of Mary Stuart David Rizzio. Robert Ferguson near the Church is a monument.
