Villa (Palace) Mon repos is located on the top of the hill of Analipsis South of the modern town of Corfu. Impressive architectural structure is located in the large green Park with centuries-old trees. According to archeological studies, the Villa is located on the site of the ancient city of Corfu.
Villa Mon repos was built in 1826 by order of the British Commissioner Frederick Adams as a gift for his wife. This is a small but very beautiful Palace with colonial architectural elements. Later Villa Mon repos became the summer residence of the British governors of Corfu. In 1864, when the Ionian Islands were annexed to Greece, the king of great Britain George I granted the Villa of the Greek Royal family. June 10, 1921 was the birthplace of Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II). During the Italian occupation of Corfu during the Second world war the Palace became the residence of the Italian Governor of the Ionian Islands.
In the decades between the Greek government and the Royal family has disputed the ownership of the Villa Mon repos. Ex-king Constantine of Greece insisted on the official confirmation of his ownership of the Villa, as in the period of his reign, placed his personal summer residence and was received as a gift from the Royal family. However, the Greek government took over the Palace as the property of the Greek state. Finally, in 2002 the European court of human rights in Strasbourg awarded to the ex-king of compensation in the amount of 7 million pounds (for all lost property after the abolition of the Royal monarchy in 1975) and has secured ownership of a Villa for the Greek state.
Today the Villa Mon repos is administered by the municipality of Corfu. A beautiful architectural structure that has preserved its former greatness, and the surrounding shady Park annually attracts thousands of tourists. The building houses the Museum, which houses the treasures recovered from the bottom of the Ionian sea, and the artifacts found during the excavations of the ancient city of Corfu.
