Bridge Akashi-Kaikyo Photo: Bridge Akashi-Kaikyo

Bridge Akashi-Kaikyo mentioned in the pages of the Guinness Book of records twice as the longest and highest bridge in the world. Its length is 3911 meters, and the height of the pylons is 298 meters. The Central span is stretched to a length of 1991 m, the length of the side spans - 960 meters.

This suspension bridge spans the Akashi Strait and connects the two cities on different Islands – Kobe on the island of Honshu and Awaji island. The decision to build the bridge was preceded by a great tragedy in 1955: on the ferry across the Strait during a storm sank two ferries at the time of the accident were killed 168 children. Residents of the coastal towns even went on strike to speed up the adoption of this decision. However, construction only began in 1988 and lasted for ten years. Currently the ferry continues to operate, because many motorists due to the high cost of the toll bridge prefer to use the ferry.

For bridge construction has developed a new grade of concrete, which quickly froze and had high durability. Next to the construction site was erected a plant for the production of concrete, right there on the shore were flooded two huge forms, which then sank in the Strait. The work was carried out with high precision and, despite the current, the error of the forms was only 10 cm. In the midst of construction in the surrounding area of Kobe in January 1995 a massive earthquake hit the Hanshin, which, though not destroyed the concrete base, but shifted one of the pylons at one meter. Within a month, was carried out the necessary calculations, in which it was decided to increase the Central span of the bridge at one meter. The guide wire between the pylons pulled up with the help of helicopters. The construction of the bridge cost the Japanese government 5 billion dollars.

It is assumed that the bridge is able to withstand strong sea currents, wind speeds up to 80 m/s, and the earthquake of a magnitude of up to 8, 5 points. On the bridge organised a six-lane traffic.

For those wishing to admire the bridge from the shore by Kobe special ground.
