Castle Güssing is located in Burgenland, Austria. The first mention of the castle dates back to the year 1157, making Güssing the oldest castle in Burgenland and its symbol.

In 1157 wooden castle was built by count Wolfram of Styria, which has received local land as a gift. However, in 1242 the king III Bel confiscated wooden castle and engaged in his strengthening, turning Güssing in a massive stone structure. Together with the castles of Wieselburg, Sopron and Lockenhaus, Güssing stood guard along the Western border of Hungary. At that time the castle had a different name – "Novum castrum". After the death of Béla III, the castle was transferred to the Order of St. John in 1246. A little less than 30 years, Henry II, together with the descendants of count of Wolfer returned to the castle in their possession.

In the summer of 1524 Francis I received the castle and 60 villages subject to him.

In 1683, under the baton of Christoph II, the castle was granted as a refuge for local residents, fleeing from the approaching Turks. Christoph and his son Adam II led the fight against the Turks.

Since 1700, the castle served as an Arsenal for the Imperial weapons. Times have changed, gradually güssing castle lost its strategic importance. In 1777, all the weapons were removed, and the castle began to slowly disintegrate. Under Empress Maria Theresa, who didn't see the point in an expensive service, there was a partial destruction of some of the castle fortifications.

In 1870 Prince Philip has created the Foundation for the preservation of the castle. Currently, all the costs of the castle is divided between the descendants of Philip and the administration of the Burgenland. Today the castle serves to attract tourists, there are theatrical performances and concerts. The chapel is used for weddings.
