The Palazzo Ducale Photo: Palazzo Ducale

The Palazzo Ducale, built in the Renaissance style in the second half of the 15th century after the accession in Gubbio Federico da Montefeltro, is a visual display of the lifestyle, inspired by humanistic ideals. On the Palace project architect worked Laurana – the work lasted from 1467 1472 years. And after 1474, when Federico de Montefeltro was proclaimed Duke in some parts of the Palazzo appeared his initials – FD (Federicus Dux), which can be seen today. It is also considered that the erection of the Palace could work Francesco di Giorgio Martini from Siena, another architect, consisting in the service of Montefeltro.

Of particular interest from the point of view of architecture is the inner courtyard of the Palazzo with an arched portico, which resembles, though on a somewhat smaller scale, palaces and courtyards of Urbino. The floor above the portico is decorated with elegant Windows with architrave divided by pilasters.

Without doubt, after the completion of the Palazzo Ducale was impressed with its interior decoration and decorations. For example, a study of the Duke, now exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of art in new York, was made of wooden panels covered with mosaic tiles up to a height of 2, 68 meters. In addition to our day perfectly preserved amazing inlays on the doors, square ceiling covering, marble fireplaces and tile roofs. Noteworthy and walls of buildings that once was on the site of the Palazzo, including the buildings of the old Town Hall, and preserved to our days – they can be seen on the side of the Palace, which faces the valley.

Today in the Palazzo Ducale, standing right opposite the Cathedral of Gubbio, is a Museum, which exhibits artifacts belonging to the Italian Agency for architectural and archaeological heritage.
