Gyor Bishopric founded by the order of St. Stephen in the period between 1000 and 1009 year. By this time one has to treat erection Gyor Basilica. For centuries, it has gained new features, but from the start of construction was a three-aisled Church with a high altar. In 1257-1267, under Bishop Omod appeared at the Basilica of the tower. During the time when Janos Hedervary (1386-1415) to the southern part was added to the chapel in the Gothic style, where currently the relics of king Saint lászló. and more recently, with the tomb of blessed Bishop Vilmos of Apara.
In the 16th century during the Turkish occupation of the Basilica lost its towers: one was damaged in 1526 during the battle, the other in 1580 strong explosion destroyed – it was used by the Turks as Arsenal. Half a century later, the restoration of the Basilica began the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Rawa by order of Bishop györgy Draskovic. The tower and the sacristy were built under Bishop György Sicani (1659-1681), Baroque interior – Ferenc Zichy (1743-1783), and the classical facade – Jakob handler in 1823. In the early twentieth century the Church received the dome with neo-Romanesque elements. During the Second World war, the roof was damaged, recovery occurred in the 1968-1972
Design projects created Hefele Mangartom, frescoes and paintings of the altar – Franz Anton Maulburg with apprentices. The altar is built and the sculptures were made at the Vienna Studio of józsef was Gotshal. The main decoration of the Northern nave altar is the icon of the Holy virgin Mary, a celebration which attracts many pilgrims.
