Reserve Bastak, located in the South of the Russian Far East and northeast of the Jewish Autonomous region – state natural reserve, which is one of the natural attractions of the region.
The reserve was founded in 1997 for the preservation and restoration of typical and unique natural complexes, which are located within the reserve, environmental monitoring, forest protection measures, the organization and conduct of environmental education of the local population, the development of new methods for the protection of nature.
The main feature of the reserve is that it is located near the boundary separating the natural complexes dominated Northern circumpolar species of fauna and flora in one part, and the southern subtropical to another. Today the territory of the preserve consists of two parcels, which total area is more than 127 thousand hectares In 2002 - 2003 along the borders of the reserve has created a special security area of about 15 thousand hectares within the EAO and about 11 thousand hectares in the Khabarovsk territory.
On the high slopes in the Northern part of the common border with spruce fir. In the Western and southern parts of the reserve there are birch forests, oak forests, lipniacki and larch forests. On the flat part mainly dominated by sedge-reed meadows, interspersed moss bogs. Middle mountain zone consists of pine-broadleaved forests, which are mainly represented by an animal and plant biodiversity of the reserve.
In the reserve there are representatives of flora and fauna listed in the Red books of the Jewish Autonomous region and Russia. For example, the Amur Adonis, Korean pine, Actinidia the kolomikta, slipper grandiflora, lychnis sparkling and so on.
In addition, the reserve has a huge variety of background species of mammals, among them deer, Chipmunk, shrew, columns and others. Often the Himalayan brown bears, wild boar, Manchurian deer and sable. In different parts of the reserve is inhabited by such rare birds as the Golden eagle, osprey, black crowned crane, Mandarin duck, crested honey Buzzard. The pride of the reserve "Bastak" is the population of Oriental white stork.
