Near Valladolid is a small but cozy town of Penafiel known fact that on its territory there is the ancient castle of the same name. Situated in an elevated position of peñafiel castle throughout its history served a protective function. The origin of the fortress dates back to the 10th century, to the reign of king of Leon Ramiro II. Extant records of it date back to 943 year. In 983 the castle was conquered by the vizier of the Cordoba Almanzora, but in 1008 count of Castile Sancho Garcia liberated the fortress from the Muslims. From the 12th to the 16th century castle of Penafiel has become an arena for the conduct of civil wars between members of the dynasty of the rulers of Castile.
In the early 14th century the castle was rebuilt, and since then, his appearance has not changed. Its form resembles a fortress strongly elongated narrow ship with 28 defensive towers located on the perimeter. The width of this amazing building is 35 meters, and length is 210 meters. In the middle of the fortress stands a massive tower with a height of 34 meters, towering over the rest of the building. In the southern part of the building is a unique Museum of Spanish wines, founded in the 20th century.
With 1456 castle Penafiel belongs to the noble family Teries-Herenow. In 1917, the fortress was declared a National historical-architectural monument. Today the castle of Penafiel is one of the most popular places to visit for tourists.
