Mount Enos Photo: Mount Ainos

Mount Ainos is the highest mountain not only of Kefalonia, but of all the Ionian Islands. Its height is 1628 km (5341 lbs). Together with the other vertices Enos forms a mountain range that runs through the Central part of the island. In 1962, the Greek government declared a large part of the mountain range National Park, and now this area is under state protection.

The slopes of Enos is predominantly covered with unique kefalonian fir (Greek fir), the birthplace of which is the island of Kefalonia. Today, however, kefalonian fir can be found in other parts of the world, but for the most part it has already crossed species. On the slopes of Enos grows and the so-called "black pine". In the period of Venetian rule from behind the thick dark pelt mount Enos received the name of Monte Negro (Black mountain), which has survived to our days. Due to the severe fires of the forest cover Enos was destroyed and some places are bare rocky areas, only occasionally overgrown with vegetation.

Flora Enos is quite diverse. Among the many plant species of special interest (except kefalonian fir) represent rare species of violets and orchids. Impressive and fauna of the local area. For example, on the slopes of the mountains you can meet rare species of wild horses, herds of goats, rabbits, turtles and many other animals. There are a large number of prey and not just birds.

On a clear Sunny day with the top of the mountain you can see the Peloponnese and Etolia, and the Islands of Zakynthos, Lefkada and Ithaca, which is a stunningly beautiful sight.
