The monastery of Millstatt is a former monastery located in Millstatt am see in Carinthia. Was founded in 1070 and for centuries has been a spiritual and cultural centre of Carinthia.

Millstatt was founded by the brothers of Aribo II and Potto from the Bavarian family of Aibonito. The Abbey flourished under the patronage of Pope Calixtus II, and in 1245 the Abbot Millstatt even got the right sewing Pontifical vestments from the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The most brilliant period in the development of the monastery fell on the Abbot Otto III. In that period it was written many valuable manuscripts, countless funds made impressive donations to the monastery.

Under the Emperor Frederick the monastery fell into decay: morality has degenerated, building gradually disintegrated, and the abbots were incompetent. Had to deal with the huge debts of the monastery and to tidy up derelict buildings. Besides, Millstatt was severely devastated by the Turks in 1478 and later by Hungarian troops in 1487. The management of the monastery passed to Maximilian I, however, the situation was severe, control was partially lost. In Millstatt happened peasant uprising and spread of the Protestant faith.

In 1598, when the Archduke Ferdinand II, the Jesuits establishing a College in the capital of Styria (modern University of Graz), at the expense of their income had to Finance Millstatt. The monks did not like the harsh measures and the pressure of the Jesuits. In 1737 discontent grew into an open rebellion, when many peasants took up arms and stormed into the monastery. In 1773, the monks were forced to leave Millstatt and all ownership have been transferred to the state office.

The most interesting part of the monastery courtyard with a two-storey Renaissance arches, built in the 16th century. The Church of the monastery is associated cloisters of the 12th century, decorated with columns with images of animals, plants and people. The Romanesque portal inside the Church was founded in 1170 by master Ruggero. In the side chapels of the Church are the tombs of masters of the order of St. George, who once belonged to the monastery.

Since 1977 the Church is the property of the parish, and all other buildings of the former monastery belonging to the Austrian State forestry Commission.
