Gorgeous scenery, free passage on a wooded mountain, footworn paths and well-maintained special huts and camps make this region the best trekking area in the country. The terrain here is very cool and suddenly rises from the rolling plains to the mountains, surrounded by almost vertical cliffs, picturesque rocks, many of which reach 1000 m in height. The Mulanje massif peaks (including the highest in the country - Capita) are above the fog that often covers the upper slopes that gave these mountains one of their local names - "the Island in the Sky".
