In 1763 the city of Ostrava little resembled the present-day metropolis. Then it was quiet, peaceful town, which was located a few blocks from the artisans ' shops, a couple of churches and a Central market square. And here in this small village had a huge fire that destroyed nearly half the city. The fire has been tamed, and in honor of this event and in gratitude to Heaven for the miraculous salvation of many lives in the main square of the city, it was decided to put a statue dedicated to Saint Florian – patron Saint of firefighters, and employees who are in some way connected with fire, for example, bakers, glass blowers, chimney sweeps.
Statue of St. Florian created in the Baroque style and was solemnly installed in front of city hall. It does not change its location for nearly 300 years, when the Communists came to power in the Czech Republic, for some reason decided that such monuments have no place on the main square in Ostrava. They removed the statue of St. Florian, replacing it with a tasteless monument, made by some policeman. The statue was given to some kind of workshop, where it was kept for over 20 years. In 1983 it was installed in a remote area of Ostrava called Grabovka. Fortunately, many citizens were aware of where it is located favorite local statue. Therefore, in 2008 it returned to the usual place – on Masaryk square, where we can see her now.
A little before the statue of St. Florian Masaryk square got removed in the 1960-ies Mariana column and cast-iron fountain.
