Modern town of Elounda is situated in the Eastern part of Crete, 12 km North of Agios Nicholas, in the Gulf of Mirabello. In ancient times, now is the Elounda was a rich Greek, and later Roman port city of Olous. After a powerful earthquake in the 2nd century BC Olos almost entirely disappeared under the water, thereby forming a small Bay and the Peninsula Kolokita ("Big Spinalonga"), coupled with Crete by a narrow isthmus.

From the middle of the 7th century, the area was almost deserted because of the constant pirate raids. In the mid-15th-century life in the region began to recover thanks to the Venetians, which opened here the extraction of salt. The picturesque fishing village grew rapidly. Its inhabitants are engaged mainly in agriculture, fishing, salt production and emery.

In the early 1900s and until 1957 Elounda was the starting point for leprosy patients, who were followed to their last resting place - the island of Spinalonga, known as the leper island", which housed a leper colony. Elounda is mentioned in the book "the Island" by Victoria Hislop, which tells the fictional story of a family related to the leper colony. At the time this book became a bestseller in England.

Over time, Elounda has developed into a prestigious resort that is famous for its beautiful scenery and luxurious hotels (most of which are five - star hotels). Elounda was a favorite destination of former Prime Minister of Greece Andreas Papandreou. He opened this place for VIPs at the world level (politicians, Arab sheikhs, artists, movies, pop, etc.).
