Novalja is one of the most rapidly developing tourist centres on the Croatian Adriatic. The city is located on the island of Pag in the Northern part. The most famous this city has become, thanks to the zrće beach, which is popular among Europeans gathering place in the summer months famous DJs and club music.

Novalja historically passed the same stages of the path, and many other Croatian towns – the first settlement of Illyrian, Roman rule, the arrival of the Croats in the 7th century during the great migration of peoples, the administration of the Venetian Republic. Each of these milestones has left its traces. Today you can see ruins of ancient walls, late antique necropolis, early-Romanesque Church of the Holy cross.

But the most famous and important landmark of the city and the whole island is a Roman aqueduct – canal-tunnel was built in the 1st century ad. The tunnel, surviving the length of which slightly more than a thousand meters, carved from solid rock. The rather complicated construction of such facilities was due to the strategic location of this place. Novalja, not then, which bore this name, was an important port on the way from the southern Adriatic sea to the ancient city of Aquileia (now Trieste). The port grew to Harbor a village was built three churches that could serve residents and arriving sailors, and passengers. Such a port, the Romans decided, must obtain a water main. An example of the remnants of a Roman aqueduct – evidence of advanced engineering of the time. In some places, where the rocks were cracked, builders used bricks. Modern researchers have found on them the stamp of Roman brick workshop "Awesone".

The aqueduct has long been sealed, but in the first half of the 19th century, the child accidentally fell into the opened underground channel. In the early 20th century a tunnel was decided to use the Austro-Hungarian authorities, the system was partially restored, but the windmill, which worked the pump was destroyed. The second attempt was made in 1929, then the pump worked on the motor, but it failed. In 1947 the last time water tried to put into operation.
