Old and New town halls Photo: Old and New city hall

Old city Hall was built in the XV century, but was partially demolished and replaced by a building of the XIX century in the style of Italian romanticism. However, as a result of restoration works, the building was returned to its historical appearance. Of special value are the front of the building, decorated with Gothic fialli, and the moulded frieze, on which are the portraits of the princes and ancestral coats of arms and paintings of medieval folk games.

Over Hannover dominated by the imposing building of the New city hall in Baroque style, built in the years 1901-1913. The building was erected on the shore of an artificial lake and rests on 3026 beech piles. Numerous bas-reliefs decorating the hall depict scenes from the history of the city. In the conference Room is a huge picture of Ferdinand Hodler "Unity", depicting the adoption by the town of Protestantism in 1533. Unique inclined Elevator takes tourists to the town hall's dome, to the observation deck, which offers a magnificent view of the city.
