Piona Abbey Photo: Abbey Of Piona

Piona Abbey is an architectural complex located on the shores of lake Como in the town of Colico and considered one of the most beautiful in Northern Italy. Abbey blending harmoniously with the amazing beauty of the landscape – it stands on top of a tiny Cape Olgiasca, which juts out into the lake, forming a small Bay. The Cove only adds charm to the whole area, with its quietness and virginity reminds about the past, about those times, when there prayed and meditated.

The Church of St. Justin is the Central architectural element of the Abbey – was built in the early middle Ages and the following centuries "overgrown" own the Priory with the monastic complex, which was part of a religious-political network created by the Cluniac congregation. Despite the fact that the Abbey was situated outside the town of Colico, it, nevertheless, was on the tracks, was of great importance in those years, when wars were fought.

Today Piona Abbey is considered one of the most romantic architectural monuments of Lombardy. The Church is decorated with a huge window lintel, and the inside consists of a single aisle. At the entrance you can see the figures of two lions in the marble fountains. Special attention deserves the cycle of paintings of the 13th century, located in the apse: in the centre is the figure of Christ with an open book surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists, and below it, the twelve apostles.

Behind the Church building are visible the ruins of the medieval apse, the purpose of which still remains unknown. The bell tower nearby, on the North side, was built in the 18th century. A covered gallery, which can be accessed through the portal with pointed arches, dates from the 13th century. The cloister makes a special impression on the perimeter of the patio installed forty-four marble columns, the capitals are gracefully decorated with images of leaves, flowers and animals. The columns support the upper floor is with terracotta archivolt and elegant Windows.

At the entrance to the cloister is the fresco of the 15th or 16th century depicting Christ appearing to Mary, and above the entrance you can see a bust of Christ. On the porch, behind the Church, there is a fresco calendar, made in a simple and fairly common style. In the upper part there are the months of the year in connection with farming, for example, July is the grinding of wheat. And in the lower part there are eleven saints and their velikomuchenitsi feats. This mural calendar was made before the construction of the cloister and was originally located outside the Church.
