Of Khutyn Saviour's Transfiguration monastery is located 10 km North of Novgorod. The life of the monastery is closely connected with the name of its founder Varlaam of Khutyn, one of the most revered saints in the North of Russia. The monastery appeared in the XII century on the "evil place", held in the power of evil forces. The power of prayer Varlaam managed to drive out evil spirits and to erect a temple - the Church of Transfiguration. Unfortunately, this temple has not survived.

In 1515 on the site of the old Church of the Saviour was built a new Transfiguration Cathedral with five domes. Especially notable is the Western porch of the Cathedral porch, decorated with tiles. In the Cathedral are buried the ashes of the great Russian poet Gavrila Romanovich Derzhavin and his wife Daria Alexeyevna. Derzhavin died in 1816 at his home in the estate, Zvanka. The coffin with the body of the deceased on a barge on the Volkhov went to their final resting place. During the great Patriotic war the monastery was destroyed. Suffered and the tomb of the Derzhavin. In 1959 he held a reburial of the remains of the poet and his wife in the Novgorod Kremlin. In 1993, in connection with the 250th anniversary of the poet, his remains were returned to the monastery.

Near Transfiguration Cathedral in 1552. built refectory Church of Varlaam, representing a pillarless construction, which adjoined the Western side of the domed cruciform chamber which is the refectory. The Church and the refectory have two floors.

After the closure of the monastery was located the establishment of the OGPU. During the great Patriotic war almost all the buildings of the monastery was badly damaged. After the war it housed a hospital for the mentally ill, and before that housed the tractor station. In the 1970s and 1980s in the monastery was a recreation area for visiting tourists.

Since 1992, the monastery began to revive monastic life. Now Khutyn monastery is a place of pilgrimage for citizens and residents of the surrounding villages. From monastery main gate, a dirt road leads to the Holy well. Beating the Cathedral of the Transfiguration and he went over the fence, you can see a small chapel on the hill, the ground for which was applied the Barlaam of Khutyn.
