The Museum of Byzantine culture in Thessaloniki is considered one of the best museums not only the capital of Greek Macedonia, but Greece. The Museum features nearly 3000 unique artifacts, perfectly illustrating the formation, the rise and fall of the legendary Byzantine Empire, and the so-called "post-Byzantine period".

In August 1913 the Governor of Central Macedonia the Stephanos Dragoumis issued a decree on the ground in Central Thessaloniki Byzantine Museum. However, this decision remained on paper, and during the First world war unique artifacts for safety left Thessaloniki and were transported to Athens and placed in "Byzantine and Christian Museum. Subsequently, the ancient relics were officially included in the collection of the Athens Museum and returned to Thessaloniki in 1994.

Decades later, once again raised the question about necessity of creation of the Byzantine Museum in Thessaloniki. For the Museum it was decided to construct a new building that meets all modern requirements, and in 1977 was declared a national architectural competition, which was won by the talented architect Kyriakos Krokos. Construction began in 1889, and in 1994 the Museum of Byzantine culture, has finally opened its doors to visitors.

The Museum exposition is divided by themes and presented in chronological order. In the first room you will get acquainted with the peculiarities of the churches of the early Christian period (4-7 century) architecture, sculpture, mosaic, painting and t.d. The second room is perfectly illustrated life and the life of people ages 4-7. The third hall presents funerary traditions and artifacts of the early Christian period. The fourth hall talks about the art and culture of the middle Byzantine period (8th to 12th century) is a period of great intellectual and artistic achievements of the Byzantine Empire, especially during the dynasty Komnenos. In a separate halls and such exposure as "dynasty of Byzantine emperors, Byzantine fortress", "the decline of the Byzantine Empire", "Byzantium after Byzantium" (the second half of the 15th – 19th century), as well as great private collections Dori Papastratos and Demetrios of Oikonomopoulou. The Museum also has a separate wing for temporary exhibitions.

Since 1998 the Museum of Byzantine culture on a regular basis as well as scientific conferences, lectures, seminars and educational programs for schoolchildren. In 2005, the Museum of Byzantine culture in Thessaloniki by the decision of the Council of Europe was awarded the title of European Museum of the year" for his invaluable contribution to the education, culture and science.
