Oberkapfenberg – old castle near the Austrian town of Kapfenberg (Federal state of Styria).
The first written mention of the existence here of the castle, however, called Hoffenberg date back to 1173. In the second half of the 13th century the castle was completely rebuilt and became the residence of the counts von Stubenberg. The castle also housed and regional Supreme court.
Subsequently the castle was several times changed its owners, but in the middle of the 16th century once again became property of the counts von Stubenberg and has undergone dramatic changes. Under the guidance of Italian architect Antonio Balin de Comose old medieval castle turned into a powerful impregnable fortress, built in the spirit of the Renaissance.
In 1739 Stubenberg moved to Vienna residence. The castle was abandoned and eventually fell into ruin. Only in 1953 the heirs of Stubenberg restored the castle, turning it into a hotel. However, the hotel lasted only until 1985, after which the castle was again abandoned. In 1992 the castle Oberkapfenberg became the property of the city of Kapfenberg. In 1994, after conducting a large-scale restoration works, the castle opened its doors to the public.
Today the castle Oberkapfenberg is an important historical and architectural monument. In the castle regularly holds various exhibitions (exhibition of weapons and instruments of torture, exhibition on alchemy, etc.) and a variety of cultural events – show birds of prey, jousting tournaments and much more. Every year in June in the castle Oberkapfenberg is one of the biggest medieval festivals in Austria, is known far beyond its borders. There are in the castle and specially equipped comfortable meeting rooms, and excellent restaurant.
Especially popular castle Oberkapfenberg use at wedding ceremonies that are usually held in the chapel of Loreto, built in 1676 and perfectly preserved.
