The Lake Of Ioannina Photo: The Lake Of Ioannina

The lake of Ioannina, known as Pamvotida or Pamvotis lake in Northern Greece (nom Ioannina). It is the largest lake in the region of Epirus. Along the Northern shore of the lake is the national road of Greece, connecting the cities of Igoumenitsa and Hair.

The lake is located South of the mountains the Rooms at an altitude of 470 m above sea level. The lake area is approximately 19, 4 sq K., average depth of 4, 5 m (maximum 11 m), and its maximum length and width 7, 9, 5, 4 km respectively. The lake is fed by several small rivers. It has no surface flow, but through sinkholes are discharged into the river Arachthos, Louros and the Kalamas.

On the shores of the lake lie the capital of Epirus, Ioannina and the small town of Perama, and the remaining area is occupied by agricultural lands. Definitely worth a visit, located not far from the Northern shores of the lake of Ioannina is a small picturesque island, where the legendary Ali Pasha Tapalansky (Anninsky) was hiding in the last days of his reign and was killed. On the island you will find a small picturesque village with narrow cobbled streets, traditional houses, cozy restaurants and cafes, and ancient monasteries, among which the monastery of prophet Elias, located at the highest point of the island, offering stunning panoramic views. Worth visiting and entertaining Museum of Ali Pasha.

In recent years, urbanization, and pollution have a negative impact on the ecosystem of the lake, which is home to small mammals, waterfowl and various species of fish and crustaceans. In the summer period as a result of eutrophication observed intense growth and algal blooms, which in turn can lead to lack of oxygen, kills fish and animals.
