During 1986, after carrying out some works in the building of the famous St. Nicholas Church, opened the Museum exposition. On the top floor of the building is the exhibition hall, while the first floor hosts the exhibition entitled "Folk art Ustiug of the earth." Today this building is the Museum of Ethnography. Richest stock collection of the Museum provide an opportunity to see a wide variety of folk art, born in the Smolensk region there are 17 early 20th centuries, namely: gorgeous patterned weaving (heald, petradi, elective, swear), cubic printing, embroidery, painting and wood carving, punching and forging, ceramics.

Unique craftsmanship have Ustyug seamstress in patterned weaving, which has always had an amazing color saturation and richness of ornament. The greatest beauty are festive costumes, woven from palupuravik and silk fabrics with hats, decorated with numerous jewels, pearl earrings and neck and breast ornaments.
